A Door is A Door, Right? WRONG!

Who knew that when we picked up an empty trailer in Spokane, WA yesterday that it would cause us sooo much trouble.  Recently Watkins-Shepard acquired several trailers from a furniture terminal on the east coast. Some of these trailers have a "roll-up" door instead of the "barndoor" style of doors in the back. After driving approximately 120 miles from Spokane to Lewiston, ID, where we were suppose to drop our trailer and hook up to an already loaded one, we were informed by the yarddog (person who moves trailers around at a shipper's lot) that they wouldn't accept our empty trailer because it had a roll-up door.  WHAT?  Who ever heard of that? Well, obviously newbies like us hadn't.

We called our dispatcher and was told that we had to drive the empty trailer back to Spokane, pick up one with the right kind of doors, if they had any available (which they didn't earlier in the day, hence why we had this different kind of trailer), and then drive all the way back to Lewiston to make our "drop and hook."  Shannon and I had limited amout of sleep for the past few days and we were looking forward to a good night of sleep and then all of this happened. Needless to say I was a little "perturbed" by this intrusion on our evening plans!  When we were at hometime, my daughter-in-law asked me what a "typical" day was for us. I didn't know what to say, because every day is unique - some good, some bad. Yesterday did not fall gracefully into the "good" category.

We did the only thing we could, we turned the truck and trailer around and drove the 120 miles back to Spokane, dropped and hooked a new trailer (fortunately, they had unloaded a couple of trailers in our absence), turned around and drove the 120 miles back to Lewiston, ID. We finally got to bed around 1:00am.  It is now 11:30am on Tuesday and we're on our way to Modesto, CA. Yesterday is quickly becoming a faded memory and we're just wondering what new adventures will be coming our way today.

  1. What a fiasco! That is so crazy...I am sure there are reasons for it, but to make you go all the way back for a different trailer...wow.

btw, The picture at the top is still small for me - I have NO idea what causes it!
